tv   9 News Now Tonight  CBS  September 30, 2010 7:00pm-7:30pm EDT

7:00 pm
this is 9news now. >> those heavy rains sent more water than our local waterways could handle and even though the tornado watch just expired, we may not be out of the woods just yet. i'm here with topper with the latest on the flood watch and if you went out today, you got wet. >> you are ready for round two? >> exactly. and it is the same way. let me start with live doppler. let me show you the rain fall totals. we are talking 6, 8, almost 10 inches of rain across the western shore of the bay. especially down toward leanardtown and lusby and calvert county. unfortunately, the next batch
7:01 pm
is going essentially the same way. even inland a little bit. we had 3, 4, 5 inches of rain across the immediate metro area. now let's talk about live activity. all right, here's what we have now live. pretty much every county is under a flood warning right now. we had the warning at the bottom of your screen. these are heavy storms. not severe, but they are rain producers from gaithersburg and down towards anne arundel. they show little movement. they are training as one leaves, another one developments. that's going to push off to the north. we do have another batch of activity and we'll come back and talk about when the heavy batch, because round two is on our doorstep. we'll break it down for you and tell you what that means for our friday morning commute. >> as you might have figured out, all this rain is causing problems from the bay all the way to the appalachians tonight. we have seen flooding and downed trees all over the place. in calvert county, the damage
7:02 pm
includes this house condemned after its foundation cracked when today's rain actually shifted the ground around it. our team coverage begins with brittany morehouse in lusby, maryland. >> you can see a lot of the homes don't believe in basements. that's a shot of the basement, or the foundation completely wiped out by their own front yard. the rain fall is so heavy out here, meanwhile, less than a mile away, you have a whole neighborhood that is just by the water and tonight is just a waiting game for them. >> you have to drive through water to get to your house, take off your shoes and socks to walk through your front yard. >> exactly how people in calvert county say while chesapeake bay washes away their stress, the rain brings it right on back. >> like on the other side of lighthouse boulevard very damp, wet. any time we have a lot of rain,
7:03 pm
there's always an accumulation of water. it always floods. >> so the waiting game begins for high tide tonight, expected at 8:30 and many people are anxious. >> so it's dark and you really can't see what's going to be happening. that's the scariest part. >> another concern, neighbors driving through pools of water on lighthouse road, the main stretch of this private community. if drivers go too fast, it's like a title wave hitting their houses. >> kevin robinson lived here his whole life. he says that's why people banning together is important. >> when we know a storm is coming, we watch the weather. it's very important and we have different people who we correspond with, you know, the neighbors, that's why we get together. this one watches on one channel. someone else watches on another. we watch the weather channel and combined them all together. you know, they are pretty good patterns. you know, the meteorologist does a good job. >> so they are hanging on every one of topper's words
7:04 pm
here in calvert county. we'll let you know how it goes. >> we are hanging on topper's words as well. meantime, the maryland natural resources police are advising folks to stay out of the potomac river because the water is just too high. high tide hit old town alexandria at 1:15 this afternoon and a barricade could be seen floating down the street. that's where king street meets the potomac. the city was handing out sandbags to anybody who needed one for most of the day. meantime, suray chin is live in vienna where folks are on edge there as well. >> derek, as soon as you came to me, it just started pouring down rain. didn't have enough time to get my hat. it is coming down pretty hard. we do know that the street that was flooded is just down the road from here and residents here are just saying, and so is this guy right here, here we go again. this is what it looked like on many streets that flooded. a merry-go-round of cars at low lying areas from anandale to
7:05 pm
vienna. those that took the chance found out the hard way and abandoned the cars all together. rising water over flowed over old court road. basically all along. roads flooded, bricks remembers flood waters in the backyard of this house. high waters turned it into a lake. but today -- >> last month it was the second big flood they've had here, so this time it was not quite so bad. so it's always a sigh of relief. >> people get crazy, but it hasn't been that bad so far. >> not so bad so far, but did they speak too soon? now the rain is coming down and it is not expected to stop for many, many more hours from here. we'll be checking, of course, those bridges and roads for high waters yet again through the coming hours and overnight.
7:06 pm
live here in vienna, 9news now. >> struck by that car, stuck in the middle of the water. learning that lesson the hard way. topper always says, don't drive through it. two people were injured when a flight landing at reagan national hit some big turbulence this morning. this happened on the u.s. airways flight coming out of providence. two flight attendants needed to be treated. nobody else was hurt. and u.s. airways is letting passengers planning to fly in and out of national change their flight without having to pay a penalty tonight. that travel advisory also extends to bwi marshal airport. continental is also offering waivers at three airports. have not heard of any other airlines. out on the rails, virginia railway express predicting delays up to an hour and a half. mark has delays of up to a half hour as well and amtrak had some delays all day long. be sure to check the status of any train you need to catch or the ones you're waiting for
7:07 pm
before you head out the door. we have links to amtrak, and mark at wusa9.com. all you have to do is click on traffic. one of the westbound lanes of the columbia pike in arlington is blocked off by those orange construction barrels tonight. that's because the heavy rains today have created a sink hole and it is right near south wakefield. crews were able to patch that hole earlier this afternoon. no word tonight on when more permanent repairs can be made. >> and the high waters closed part of the dulles toll road. patranya, that sounds terrible. >> that does sound terrible. it's bad news from the dulles toll road. still closed between franklin street and the dc line. be aware of that. don't cross the rising water. you saw what happened to that guy. other problems on the roads because of the rain. we had a downed tree, that icon is gone. it may still be out there.
7:08 pm
georgetown pike, use springhill road to get around it. and we are going to wrap it up, where we are seeing volume out here. that has been pushed off to the shoulder. but some late delays because of this. a lot of people trying to get home. derek, back to you. >> thanks, patranya. now an update on that bus accident we showed you yesterday along i-270. two youngsters on board that charter bus that crashed in north bethesda say the driver clearly had some sort of medical emergency. riley oliviero says the retired police officer collapsed on to the steering wheel just before the crash. he also says one of the parents, sally currie tried to intervene. tried to grab that wheel and steer the bus back on course, but the unconscious driver was right on top of it. >> and i looked over to the bus driver and slumped over on the steering wheel. >> he slumped over. >> he slumped over -- i
7:09 pm
thought he had a heart attack. >> and we heard bus driver, lookout. and a smash and we were just tipping and rolling. and push off the hill. >> wow. maryland state police are still waiting for the results of an autopsy on that bus driver whose name is joseph. up next, what you need to know before the laws change in maryland tomorrow. here's a picture of today's flooding from north beach, maryland. gabriel submitted this one to wusa9.com. send us your pictures via e- mail. photos@wusa9.com or you can upload them on wusa9.com. or on our facebook fan page. get them on the air and on wusa9.com.

7:13 pm
7:14 pm
7:15 pm
back now with a consumer alert to keep money in our pockets. the postal regulatory commission denied a request to raise the cost of stamps by 2 cents. the u.s. postal service wanted that increase to offset from the recession. okay, so folks now it is official. the u.s. postal service is in serious financial trouble. they are billions in debt. how much do you care about that? do you think you can get by by sending me mails and paying bills online or is the postal service some shape or form still critical to running a modern society? i'll be talking about this at
7:16 pm
11:00 tonight. in the meantime, you talk about it in mcginty's mail bag. a northern virginia woman had just $5 in her pocket and she decided to spend that on a lotto ticket. guess what? it paid off. lindsey has the story of a woman in arlington who just became a millionaire. >> that day, something whispered to me that hey, go ahead. >> she says she wasn't even sure what megamillions was, but decided to go ahead and buy her first virginia lotto ticket. >> and she asked, do you want to get a megaplay. i said what's that? and she explained to me that i double my money and i said sure, why not. i let the machine pick the numbers. >> now she's a millionaire. >> this morning was the first time i cried. i cried and realized that it is that big. i lost five pounds already. i haven't slept. i haven't ate. >> she bought the ticket at giant on glee road in arlington. the store is getting $10,000

7:18 pm
meantime, help several drivers who didn't pay any attention, didn't listen to topper and got stranded in the high water. up in annapolis, store owners piling up the sandbags trying to keep the rising water out of the front door. some streets and sidewalks already looking more like canals. annapolis is also dealing with some backed up sewage lines, which is just nasty and not helping with the flooding one bit. okay. >> you know what will help them. the winds are going pho go northwestward here after midnight. it will push the water away from the western shore. >> didn't you tell me they were due to get 9 inches of rain in annapolis? >> at about 5 with at 4 or so on the way. down in southern maryland, we have had report of 10 inches of rain. let's start with the picture that was sent in to us and this will show you the heavy rain. this is west of town. even out in loudoun county, you see the bird there and the arrow? that was 5 inches of rain. we appreciate that. so plenty of rain to go around.
7:19 pm
i mean, the bulls eye definitely was south and east of town. west of town, we had 4, 5-inch amounts. this is the first batch that is gone. up in portions of new york state now and this is batch number 2 that is really just on our doorstep. in fact, it's going to get in here in the next hour, hour and a half. it will exit the region earlier. so i think the rush hour will be better. not so to say you will have problems getting to work. the heavy rain will be done by about 3:00 or 2:00 in the morning. may have some showers to worry about, but should be a little better commute than what we had today at least. tonight, well what you see is what you get. flash flood watch, heaviest south and east. an additional 1 to 5 inches. temperatures upper 50s to mid 60s. and again, when the winds kick, that will take all the water pushed out the western side of the bay away. let me show you live doppler 9,000. you can access this on our website. notice the heavy rain in fredericksburg, it will shoot
7:20 pm
right up i-95. so the access of really heavy rain will be either side of 95. heavy rain, out 108 and also georgia avenue there alany and all through wheaten and also through east, west highway. and down to the south, more heavy rain. just getting going in laplata. everything training up to the north. let's go back to the computer. and we'll talk about rain fall amounts. again, an additional 5 inches is possible over annapolis and an additional inch or two in the immediate metro area. that's really insult to injury. so critical time, 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. bulls eye is going to be south and east of town. there will be more flooding and allow extra time tomorrow. telecommute if you can, because that would help you out. look at the winds, still gusting to 23 downtown. because they are out of the southeast, that will push the tides above normal and the coastal flood warnings. the winds turn tonight. that will be the key.
7:21 pm
high tide tonight, 1:57 a.m. 1:25 in indian head. the tide tomorrow in annapolis should be okay. the tides in old town and indian head, a lited l more problematic. derek. >> from our weird news file, anybody who watches this show consistently knows topper and i have a love for one thing in particular. what is that? it is bacon. that is right. but we aren't talking about kevin bacon, or were we? to ebay where a group is calling itself, what would bacon do -- made entirely out of, what else? bacon. the ebay listing says that bacon kevin bacon has been preserved. so he will quote, stay tasty for generations, which would make sense if you could eat it, which you cannot do, by the way. the company runs on the slogan, everything should taste like bacon and they invented bacon
7:22 pm

7:26 pm
without merit or reason, he has been given a lawful order and he has chosen to disobey that lawful order. the president's birthplace is not relevant. president obama is our president plain and simple. so you might believe, nick, but apparently it's not so simple to ray in fredericksburg. senator mccain had no problem allowing his birth certificate to be seen. so why all the secrecy on the part of president obama? if he has nothing to hide, president obama should let judges see his original birth certificate. i think there are enough questions that should be answered to put the whole matter to rest once and for all. okay first of all, the obama campaign put this document online. see, barack hussein obama, it is not a forgery. and they went down and put their hands on the original document. they have photos on their
